Research Centres - The Institute of Neurology and The Institute of Cell and Molecular Science

Since its inception in 1999, Aims2Cure has financed research at the Institute of Neurology which is part of the University of London and is affiliated to The National Hospital for Nervous Diseases in Queen Square, London. In the Department of Neuroinflammation there, Dr Jennifer Pocock leads a team who are researching into the intricate abnormal mechanisms which are at the root of the problem in MS. Discovering what is going wrong in the nerve cells themselves will enable scientists and doctors to understand the main basic problems in MS. This will then hopefully allow drugs to be produced which are aimed at the specific abnormalities in these nerves.
Aims2Cure has donated over £375,000 over the past seven years to the Institute of Neurology and we are committed to a further three years at a financial commitment of £110,000.

The Institute of Cell and Molecular Science at Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry in Whitechapel, London has a newly formed Multiple Sclerosis research department. Professor David Baker (a Research Scientist) and Professor Gavin Giovannoni (a Consultant Clinical Neurologist) head a research and clinical team there. Aims2Cure is financing a Research Scientist in their unit. This research has a more clinical slant and is looking at the abnormalities in the immune system in MS. This research involves patients with MS and who are currently being treated with a drug called Interferon. Information from this study will hopefully provide more insight into the underlying abnormalities in MS and what can be done to modify them.

Aims2Cure has a financial commitment to this unit of £70,000 over the next three years.
